Trends

in fashion, style

Trends are so funny to me. Who gets to decide what’s trendy for next year, and why am I inclined to ALSO think it’s cute when I never thought it was cute before? All of a sudden, now I think denim shirts are adorable? As I get older, I’m starting to think more sensibly when it comes to fashion. Buy more basics that will last longer. Buy less trendy clothing that will end up in Goodwill in a couple years.

I remember one of the first trends that I followed when I was young was wanting saddle shoes. Yes, of all things. Saddle shoes. I remember one of my friends had them, and I obviously needed them too. Whether the shoes were popular elsewhere, I’m not even sure, but it was my first experience that I can remember of “following a trend”. Then there were the knee-high socks from Clueless. And the Rachel haircut. Combat boots. Airwalks. Short flower dresses. Checkerboard Umbro shorts. Come on, if you grew up in the 90s, you had those things!

What were some of your favorite trends growing up?

oh man, remember those jelly shoes? that were clear? those were my jam and all they did were blister your feet and so my mom wouldn’t let me wear them anymore. :(

and UMBRO shorts! i completely forgot about those!!

i also had a lot of ‘girl power’ t-shirts that bragged about all the sports i played. (yeah right, i never played sports).

current trend i love that i’m pretty sure i’m going to hate in 6 months: leopard loafers. even as i say it out loud, it gets more and more ridiculous…

I always wanted jelly shoes too, but think my mother called them ‘impractical’! I remember having saddle shoes, but did I actually wear them, other than on halloween with my ‘poodle girl’ costume? Definitely had the checkerboard Umbro shorts…HA! I can remember in 4th grade asking my mom for turtlenecks…because ‘all the cool girls wore them’.
